This book reflects on a quarter-century of observations by Charles Kieffer (Research Director CNRS, Paris) during his dialectological research from 1957-1981 in all of Afghanistan, sometimes under very adventurous circumstances. <br/>As a contributor to the “Linguistic Atlas of Afghanistan” under the direction of the late Prof. Georges Redard (University of Bern), he has also collected material about the private life and the intimate vocabulary of the people living in the countryside. <br/>Dealing with the oral folk culture, where the people are, in part, illiterate and deeply influenced by Islam, gave the author the opportunity to bring to light some taboos, prohibitions on speech, and language obligations still well noticeable in everyday life. <br/>

“Le livre s’ouvre sur un hommage à Georges Redard (1921-2005), professeur aux Universités de Berne et de Neuchâtel et concepteur de l’Atlas linguistique de l’Afghanistan. C’est à l’occasion de son activité de premier collaboratuer de l’Atlas que l’auteur a recueilli, entre 1957 et 1981, la matière du présent ouvrage. Grâce à sa connaissance des cultures et traditions afghanes, il a pu rassembler un matériau riche et varié dans le domaine, en partie crypté, des tabous et interdits. Après une introduction portnat sur les modalités de l’enquête, l’auteur présente successivement les tabous liés aux noms s’animaux, les interdits se rapportant au corps et aux organes sexuels, puis le “obligations de langage” en relation avec les événements de la vie quotidienne et du cycle de vie, ainsi qu’avec les pratiques de la region.<br/>L’ouvrage ne prétend ni à l’exhaustivité, ni à la construction théorique; il sera néanmoins utile à tous ceux qui s’intéressent aux pratiques de l’Afghanistan rural, langagier ou non.
