ISD works with more than one hundred academic publishers, each of which maintains its own policies regarding examination and desk copies. In most cases, instructors seeking an exam or desk copy should contact the publisher directly.
If you are unable to locate the publisher’s exam or desk copy policy, ISD may be able to assist by forwarding your request to the publisher for review.
Examination Copies
Examination copies are intended for instructors who are considering a title for course adoption.
Requests should include:
- Title, author, and publisher of the book under consideration
- Course name and number
- Institution name
- Expected enrollment
- Semester in which the title may be adopted
For some titles, publishers may make DRM-protected PDF or EPUB examination copies available in lieu of a print copy. Availability and format are determined by the publisher.
Desk Copies
Desk copies are intended for instructors who have already adopted a title for classroom use and require a copy for teaching purposes.
Requests should include:
- Title, author, and publisher of the adopted book
- Course name and number
- Institution name
- Enrollment for the course
- Name and email address of the appropriate campus bookstore contact
Instructors may also be asked to provide documentation confirming that the title has been requested for ordering through the institution’s bookstore.
International Requests
Depending on publisher policy, examination/desk copies may be shipped directly by the publisher or fulfilled by ISD on the publisher’s behalf.
For copies shipped by ISD, recipients are responsible for any customs duties, import taxes, VAT, brokerage fees, or other charges assessed by their country or local authorities. ISD is not responsible for these fees and cannot reimburse or prepay them on behalf of recipients.

Please include all relevant course information and any supporting documentation available. Examination and desk copy requests are subject to publisher approval, and eligibility requirements, formats, and fulfillment policies vary by publisher.
