Ancient Egypt is omnipresent in the media. However, the large numbers of narratives present in today’s popular culture, which merely blur the concept of Egypt for dramaturgical purposes, have so far been barely examined by research on the reception of Egypt. Drawing methodologically on Jan and Aleida Assmann’s theory of cultural memory, Frederic Krueger addresses the question of what these popular images of Egypt reveal about us rather than what they say about ancient Egypt itself and what their function is for Western discourses of identity. He focuses on the successful science fiction saga Stargate which has been presenting traditional Egyptian images in exotic new variations since 1994. Krueger shows the different modes of reception that can be identified in this Egyptian version of Star Wars, traces their origins within the classical roots of the Western hemisphere by taking into consideration the history of memories, and explains the current socio-political and research-historical significance of this and other popular constructions of Egypt – not least with regard to the self-image of Egyptology as an academic discipline. Er legt den Fokus seiner Untersuchung auf die erfolgreiche Science-Fiction-Saga Stargate, die seit 1994 traditionelle Agyptenbilder in einem exotischen neuen Gewand prasentiert: Durch ein mystisches Portal reisen amerikanische Soldaten und Wissenschaftler auf fremde Planeten, wo in danikenscher Fasson Auaerirdische anzutreffen sind, die einst als Gotter die agyptische Hochkultur auf der Erde begrundeten. Sie uben noch heute eine galaktische Schreckensherrschaft aus, die Erinnerungen an das Buch Exodus wachruft und die heldenhaften Amerikaner zur Befreiung des galaktischen Orients provoziert. Krueger legt offen, welche verschiedenen Rezeptionsmodi sich in diesem agyptischen Krieg der Sterne differenzieren lassen, spurt gedachtnisgeschichtlich deren Ursprungen in den antiken Wurzeln des Abendlandes nach und zeigt die aktuelle soziopolitische und wissenschaftsgeschichtliche Relevanz dieser und anderer popularer Agyptenkonstruktionen – nicht zuletzt fur die fachliche Selbstbeleuchtung der Agyptologie.
