Medecin grec prisonnier des Perses a l’epoque des luttes fratricides opposant Cyrus et Artaxerxes, Ctesias partagea la vie de la Cour orientale et assista – bon gre mal gre – aux intrigues de la famille royale. Soumis aux caprices de la reine mere, il fut le temoin impuissant de tortures et meurtres multiples, jusqu’a son depart mysterieux aux environs de 398 avant J.-C. Prisonnier mais protege, Ctesias profita de sa situation pour tout noter: la cruaute des princesses orientales, veritables maitresses de la politique, la richesse fabuleuse du pays, ses liens privilegies avec l’Inde peuplee d’hommes et d’animaux etranges. L’acces aux archives lui permit aussi de remonter le temps: recits, documents et temoignages directs lui fournirent ainsi la matiere de ces Histoires de l’Orient, depuis le royaume assyrien de Semiramis jusqu’aux rivalites intestines dont il fut le temoin privilegie. Immense fresque historique, melange de fiction et de reel, de mensonges et de naivete, son oeuvre fait renaitre sous les personnages de legendes les ombres des rois ayant reellement vecu dans les murs de Ninive, Suse, Babylone et Ecbatane.
