C’est un document d’une importance considerable que cette Histoire des Goths ecrite vers 550 de notre ere: Jordanes, chretien de Constantinople, lui-meme tres probablement issu d’un milieu goth, dresse des tableaux saisissants, ainsi ceux de la prise de Rome par Alaric, ou celui de la fameuse bataille des Champs Catalauniques qui, en 451, contre Attila, le chef des Huns. Attila est d’ailleurs la grande ombre qui plane sur cette histoire, et le recit de sa mort n’en est pas moins etonnant.
