This book unites most of the papers which were held during the colloquium „Architecture and Liturgy“ in Greifswald in 2003. German Description: Die Beitrage dieses Bandes entstanden anlasslich des Kolloquiums “Architektur und Liturgie”, das im Juli 2003 in Greifswald gehalten wurde. Dabei stand das Verhaltnis zwischen Architektur und Liturgie in Ost und West in seinen Strukturen im Mittelpunkt, um so Gemeinsamkeiten und spezifische Unterschiede herauszustellen. Es stellte sich die Frage nach der Funktion von Architektur: Wahrend sich die Archaologie und die Kunstgeschichte einem Bau zunachst mit typologischen und stilistischen Fragestellungen nahert, verfolgt die Liturgiewissenschaft die Frage nach den rituellen Ablaufen. In diesem Geflecht von Architekturformen, Bautopographie, Bausymbolik und liturgischer Funktion spielen u. a. auch die Bildprogramme eine wesentliche Rolle. Welche Bedeutung kam Architektur in Ost und West zu? Wie sehr war sie Ausdruck der Selbstdarstellung einzelner Stifter? Stellte sie lediglich den kultischen Raum fur die Ausubung der liturgischen Riten bereit oder kam ihr selbst eine uberhohte Bedeutung zu? Gerade in diesen Punkten liegen die grossten Differenzen zwischen den Entwicklungen im ostlichen und westlichen Mittelalter. Der interdisziplinare Diskurs dient dazu, den Dialog zwischen den Wissenschaftlern im Bereich der spatantiken und byzantinischen Kunst mit jenen im Bereich der westlichen mittelalterlichen Kunst sowie den Theologen und Liturgiewissenschaftlern zu intensivieren und sie zu vernetzen.
