Excavations in the late 19th and early 20th century in the cemetery of the Etruscan city of Vetulonia unearthed many opulent ‘princely graves’ dating to the Orientalizing period (end of the 8th – beginning of the 6th century BC). However, the cemetery has never been the subject of a comprehensive investigation. This volume offers for the first time an overall picture of the research history, the funeral customs and the material culture of Orientalizing Vetulonia. The study is aimed at recontextualizing the grave complexes and is based on the unpublished original documentation and on the corpus of finds. New insights on the social development of Vetulonia are offered, in particular on the emergence the ‘gentilician’ society and the phenomenon of the ‘princely graves’.

„This handsomely produced volume is profusely illustrated and the accompanying CD contains two extensive catalogues in searchable PDF format (tombs; grave goods by type). The list of contents is detailed and there is an index of tombs, but it is included as column 14 within the second of the two concordances. To consult the concordances, the book has to be turned 90 degrees. An index of subjects would have been useful for quick consultation. That is a minor quibble. Colombi is to be congratulated on producing an essential resource for the understanding, and future study, of Orientalising Vetulonia and its necropolis.“

Von Ross Cowan

In: BMCR (Bryn Mawr Classical Review) 2020.02.07
-------------------------------
„This is an impressive book and a testament to the author’s dedicated research into both archival and archaeological materials. Colombi’s study grew out of her dissertation (University of Basel 2014), and it is, in my opinion, one of the finest examples of a scholarly book based on an earlier dissertation. We owe her and her mentors gratitude for a study which will no doubt be of great value to many Etruscologists for years to come.“

Von Richard Daniel De Puma

In: Etruscan Studies 2019 22(1-2), S. 179-181
