This study focuses on cultural exchange and aspects of acculturation going back to Greek settlement in southern Italy and Sicily and the resulting various forms of coexistence between the Italian and Sicilian population and the Greek colonists. Taking into account the development of types of grave, burial gifts and funeral customs, this volume analyzes various influential phenomena, such as the relationships between colony and mother city, those between the various individual colonies and their surroundings as well as to the people living close-by. The study is based on three case studies: the Euboean settlements Pithekoussai and Kyme in Campania, the Akhaian colony of Metapontum and the Spartan Taras in southern Italy, and the Rhodian-Cretan establishments Akragas and Gela in Sicily. German text.

Martin A.
