Au cours d’une excursion d’etude dans la region sud-est de la vallee du Jourdain, le P. Alexis Mallon, directeur de la succursale de l’Institut Biblique a Jerusalem, visita en janvier 1929 les petites collines a peine discernables de Ghassul et reconnut sur le champ l’importance et la haute antiquite des ruines qui y affeuraient. On forma bientot le projet d’y faire des excavations. Le R.P. John O’Rourke entreprit avec zele et energie les preparatifs, et grace a la generosite d’une famille americaine, qui desira conserver l’anonymat, les fouilles purent etre enterprises, sous la direction du P. Mallon, des decembre de la meme annee, pour etre continues jusqu’en 1934, puis reprises en 1936 et 1938. Bien que l’interet fut d’abord archeologique, on ne pouvaint exclure a l’avance la possibilite de voir ces fouilles projeter quelque lumiere sur les debuts de l’histoire biblique.
