He shows that the present form of the text does not result from the compilation of sources, nor was it the work of one or a few large-scale redactions. Rather, it is the product of a continuous process of literary expansions through which the foundation myth of the Exodus constantly gained narrative complexity and theological depth. German description: Christoph Berner legt eine detaillierte redaktionsgeschichtliche Analyse der Exoduserzahlung (Ex 1-15) und des mit ihr literarisch eng verknupften Jitro-Kapitels Ex 18 vor. Dabei zeigt sich, dass das Paradigma der Neueren Urkundenhypothese vollstandig zu verabschieden ist. Samtliche Textanteile lassen sich im Rahmen eines zumeist kleinschrittig verlaufenden Fortschreibungsprozesses erklaren, in dem die Exoduserzahlung sukzessive Gestalt gewann. Noch in einer vorpriesterschriftlichen Entwicklungsphase wurde sie redaktionell mit der Vatererzahlung der Genesis verbunden und damit zum Teil einer Erzvater und Exodus umfassenden Volksgeschichte, der die priesterschriftliche Bearbeitung sodann offenbarungstheologisches Profil verleiht. Hieran anknupfend entspinnt sich eine komplexe nachpriesterschriftliche Fortschreibungsaktivitat, der weite Teile der Exoduserzahlung allererst ihre Existenz verdanken. Das alle Phasen der Textgenese einende Prinzip ist die fortwahrende emidraschartige’ Selbstauslegung der werdenden Schrift.
