English summary: Modern English language has mostly been shaped by two major influences: the works of Shakespeare and the ‘Authorized Version of the Bible’ (AV) from 1611 (also ‘King James Version’ or ‘King James Bible’), still the most prevalent version in the English-speaking world. This volume presents both a concise examination of the origins of the AV and its precursors and a comprehensive overview of its linguistic characteristics. The title examines the language of the AV in terms of typography, graphics and punctuation, morphology, syntax and vocabulary. It describes and explains the main differences not only to contemporary English but also to the English of the 17th century, using examples from the Bible. In addition, the volume provides a complete survey of the strikingly large number of proverbs and sayings originating from the Bible that have become part of everyday English language.
