English summary: The question of empathy in literary figures is the latest since the “ethical turn” in literary and cultural studies as current as ever. This book studies the contested area between emotional engagement, intellectual interests, and aesthetic distance, as it exists in literary texts, from all points of view of empathy and sympathy. How do feelings of sympathy and empathy get along together for literary figures in the context of cognitive sciences? Which narrative strategies are available in various genres, in order to produce empathy and sympathy or critical space and antipathy? This book considers such questions from a comparative perspective, in which studies from British and American English studies, German and Romance philology are brought together; through an expanded concept of the text, contributions from film and media studies are also considered. Dieser Band untersucht das Spannungsfeld zwischen emotionalem Engagement, intellektuellem Interesse und asthetischer Distanz, wie es fur literarische Texte charakteristisch ist, unter den Gesichtspunkten der Empathie und Sympathie. Inwiefern lasst sich das Empfinden von Empathie und Sympathie fur literarische Figuren mithilfe kognitionswissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse verstehen? Welche narrativen Strategien stehen in unterschiedlichen Genres bereit, um Empathie und Sympathie oder aber kritischen Abstand und Antipathie zu erzeugen? Der Band widmet sich Fragen wie diesen aus komparatistischer Perspektive, indem er Beitrage aus Anglistik und Amerikanistik, Germanistik und Romanistik vereinigt; unter einem erweiterten Textbegriff werden zudem auch film- und medienwissenschaftliche Ansatze berucksichtigt.
