Das Werk beschreibt die Dialekte der arabischsprachigen muslimischen, christlichen und judischen Gemeinden, wie sie bis zum israelischen Unabhangigkeitskrieg 1948 in Haifa existierten. Diese Dialekte sind heute weitgehend verschwunden, und Arabisch wird vor allem von einer aus dem Umland zugezogenen Bevolkerung gesprochen. Fur seine Untersuchung hat der Autor zahlreiche hochbetagte Informanten aus allen drei Religionsgruppen interviewt und auf Tonband aufgenommen. Ein umfangreicher Textteil dokumentiert nicht nur die heute verschwundenen Dialekte, sondern gibt zugleich faszinierende Einblicke in eine untergegangene Welt und wirft Licht auf unbekannte historische Tatsachen.
