English summary: The doctrine of the universal priesthood has been an integral part of Protestant ecclesiology and clerical theology since the Reformation. Its significance is based on very few historical records from the First Epistle of Peter and the Book of Revelations. However, do these records really provide the evidence that has been ascribed to them? How should we interpret conferment of the priesthood on people who were priests neither by origin, nor by training or social function? Based on the status and role of priests in Greco-Roman Antiquity and in the Old Testament, Volker Gackle illustrates conflicts surrounding the priesthood, the temple and religious ritual in the various movements that were part of Judaism during the Second Temple Period, in order to understand what Jewish-Christian authors mean when they apply the metaphor of priesthood to early Christian communities. Ausgehend vom priesterlichen Status und den priesterlichen Funktionen in der griechisch-romischen Antike und im Alten Testament zeichnet Volker Gackle die Konflikte um Priestertum, Tempel und Kult in den verschiedenen Stromungen des Judentums in der Zeit des Zweiten Tempels nach, um zu verstehen, was judenchristliche Autoren mit der Applikation der Priestermetapher auf die fruhchristlichen Gemeinden beabsichtigen.
