Le malgache, dont l’interet avait ete signale des le XVIIe siecle par Flacourt, a beneficie au XIXe siecle de remarquables travaux descriptifs, anglophones puis francophones. Il n’empeche que les grammaires produits par ces generations “missionnaires” doivent etre reprises suivant les exigences d’une linguistique generale fortement renouvelee depuis le milieu du XXe s. De fait, plusieurs linguistes, equipes ou centres de recherche s’attachent aujourd’hui a re-saisir la langue malgache, chacun dans sa perspective theorique propre: ceci, tant a Madagascar et autour de l’Ocean indien ou la linguistique austronesienne trouve son lieu naturel, qu’en Europe, ou la Norvege et la France entretiennent ainsi d’anciens liens culturels, et pour des raisons intrinsequement linguistiques, de plus recente date aux USA et au Canada. Le present ouvrage decrit l’etat de langue dit malgache officiel, sur base d’un corps dont sont analyses en detail 450 enonces, echelonnes du classique ancien a la langue commune actuelle. Une description empirique poussee definit d’abord chaque type ou classe de constituants par son domaine d’emplois, et de la, conduit a reconnaitre son utilite fonctionnelle dans la construction de la phrase. Suivant cette demarche inductive, l’auteur montre comment l’enonce grammatical malgache s’edifie jusqu’aux structures les plus complexes par un jeu d’applications successives, ou interviennent des phenomenes typologiquement remarquables (voix multiples a realisation ingenieusement economique, nom verbal avec son possesseur-agent, verbes, series…). Le livre offre ainsi a la fois une syntaxe descriptive et une caracterisation typologique de cette langue percue dans son originalite.
