Jamais l’homme n’a ete autant qu’aujourd’hui un probleme pour lui-meme. Mais les diverses sciences speciales ne nous fournissent pas de la question anthropologique une idee qui ait de l’unite. Il est urgent – et theologiquement opportun – de chercher a degager celle-ci. Le present travail voudrait y contribuer. Apres une longue Introduction historique sur les principaux courants anthropologiques dans la pensee du XXe siecle, le livre comprend quatre parties systematiques. La premiere traite du rapport de l’homme au monde (y compris le contraste entre l’homme et l’animal). La deuxieme partie considere le moi, le soi, la conscience, et la capacite humaine de connaitre, de vouloir, d’agir (notamment au niveau moral). La troisieme partie, axee sur l’essence de l’homme, explore la notion d’ame, le theme de l’esprit, la problematique du corps, la difference de l’individu et de la personne. La quatrieme partie, dont le fil conducteur est le rapport aux autres et a l’Autre, etudie la relation interpersonnelle, le rapport de l’homme et de la societe, la dimension historique, la visee de l’Absolu a travers l’art, la philosophie et la religion. L’Epilogue indique l’arriere-plan theologique et caracterise l’approche de l’ouvrage. Dans de longues notes, le livre tient particulierement compte de l’apport hegelien (theorie de l’ame,de la conscience, de la conscience de soi, de la raison, de l’esprit). En langue francaise, on ne trouve guere l’equivalent de la synthese – vaste et precise – ici proposee.
