These essays reflect the author’s own eavesdropping on what are often unexpected aspects of Barth’s own theology. A mix of previously-published and new essays, the collection brings Barth into conversation with a range of contemporary theological and cultural issues.

Geoff Thompson is a retired minister of the Uniting Church in Australia who, after several years in congregational ministry in inner-suburban Melbourne, spent over twenty years teaching systematic theology, first at Trinity Theological College (Brisbane) and then at Pilgrim Theological College (Melbourne). Through Pilgrim, he remains an Honorary Research Fellow of the University of Divinity.  He has published widely on the theology of the Uniting Church, and served as Editor of Uniting Church Studies from 2022-2026. A broader interest in the nature and functions of Christian doctrine led to the publication of Christian Doctrine: A Guide for the Perplexed (T&T Clark, 2021). His interest in Karl Barth stemmed from his PhD (Cambridge, 1996) on Barth’s notion of extra-ecclesial truth. Over the years he has served on numerous state and national Uniting Church bodies, including the Assembly’s Working Group on Doctrine. He lives in Melbourne/Naarm, on the land of the Wurundjeri Woi-worrung people of the Kulin nation.
