English summary: Compared with current ones, the navigation techniques and practices of the ancients are relatively simple, based on essential but extremely effective principles, as evidenced by their long persistence over time. Little theory and a lot of practice, few tools and a lot of experience; the extraordinary ability to relate to the environment and the natural elements has developed that “marine sense” that has always been a peculiarity of the people of the sea until the twilight of sail navigation, that is, until the first half of last century. Thus we can find different principles of the ancient art of navigation in recent traditional seafaring, or in work and fishing navigation, within a popular context that has mostly preserved “archaic” characteristics. It is the same as regards the feelings of the sailors and their beliefs regarding boats and the sea. Nautical Ethnography, therefore, represents an important tool for comparative study, helping us understand methods of navigation that only our perspective as modern technological people leads us to see as rudimentary. Methods of navigation that, on the other hand, have their own special refinement, perfectly suited to every need, developed in order to allow regular movement from one end of the Mediterranean to the other, and even to tackle ocean voyages. Italian description: Se confrontate con quelle attuali, le tecniche e le pratiche di navigazione degli antichi risultano relativamente semplici, basate su principi essenziali ma estremamente efficaci, come dimostra la loro lunga persistenza nel corso del tempo. Poca teoria e tanta pratica, pochi strumenti e molta esperienza; la straordinaria capacita di rapportarsi con l’ambiente e con gli elementi naturali ha sviluppato quel “senso marino” che e sempre stato una peculiarita propria delle genti di mare fino al tra-monto della vela, ovvero fino alla prima meta del secolo scorso. Possiamo cosi ritrovare di-versi principi dell’antica arte di navigare nella recente marineria tradizionale, ovvero nella marineria da lavoro e da pesca, in un conte-sto popolare che maggiormente ha conservato caratteri “arcaici”. Lo stesso e accaduto per i sentimenti dei marinai, per le loro credenze nei confronti delle imbarcazioni e del mare. L’etnografia nautica rappresenta quindi un importante strumento di studio comparativo, che ci aiuta a comprendere modi di navigare che solo la nostra ottica di moderni uomini tecnologici ci fa apparire rudimentali. Modi di navigare che, invece, presentano una loro speciale raffinatezza, perfettamente adeguati ad ogni necessita, a spostarsi regolarmente da un capo all’altro del Mediterraneo e perfino ad affrontare viaggi oceanici.
