Le philologue n’a peut-etre pas de but plus louable que d’aider avec ses instruments specifiques, a la reconstruction precise des societe disparues. On sait quelle importance a pour l’historien la notion de colonisation. La presente etude essaie de cerner le sens des mots qui expriment en grec ancien la colonisation sous ses divers aspects ; deux familles de mots sont en concurrence, l’une archaique autour de ktizo, l’autre en pleine expansion, autour de oikeo et surtout de oikizo ; la premiere exprime a l’origine une colonisation essentiellement agricole ; la seconde une colonisation de peuplement. Du mycenien a l’epoque chretienne, c’est une vaste tranche d’histoire linguistique qui est examinee, en elle-meme et dans ses rapports avec l’histoire dont l’evolution la precede toujours.
