Le mot grec kairos designe a l’epoque d’Homere un lieu nevralgique du corps, un point critique. Comment en est-il venu a signifier bientot l’occasion, et, en grec moderne, le temps ? Quand, dans la Grece du Ve siecle avant J.-C., naissent les sciences humaines – medecine, politique, rhetorique – , elles cherchent a elaborer un art de la prevision et du pronostic et voient dans la maitrise du kairos la cle du succes. Par quelles voies medecins et orateurs tentent-ils de capturer ce kairos multiforme et insaisissable ? Telles sont quelques-unes des questions a l’origine de cette etude. Dans un monde qui ignore encore largement l’art de la mesure, on assiste aux premiers efforts de la pensee grecque pour tracer l’ebauche d’une logique de la qualite – quete toujours actuelle dont temoignent les efforts de la science contemporaine.
