Selon Francoise Letoublon, la linguistique actuelle, une fois pasee l’epoque des theories globales, s’appuie sur l’etude de sujets precis dans des langues particulieres. Les langues anciennes ont de ce point de vue autant d’interet que les langues vivantes, et fournissent au linguiste un outil irremplacable, la tradition philologique. Je vais, nous allons, j’irai : le francais, comme le grec ancien, conjugue le verbe aller sur plusieurs radicaux : ce livre justifie cette bizarrerie de la conjugaison au moyen d’une analyse des emplois du grec archaique. Ce verbe irregulier montre comment la langue unit la reference a l’espace-temps oriente autour du locuteur aux oppositions d’aspect caracteristiques du grec, comme en francais “je vais – je viendrai – j’allais – je vins “. D’autres paradigmes verbaux ont eu une syntaxe propre et un sens specifique. Mais des l’epoque homerique, le paradigme ” aller/venir ” les influence, neutralisant cette specificite. Le systeme d’ensemble est analyse comme une galaxie : les verbes-satellites tournent autour du paradigme-soleil ; au cours du temps, ils s’en sont rapproches pour former des doublets (synonymes) ou se sont egares dans le neant. Un champ semantique comme celui du mouvement permet de preciser la connaissance du grec archaique : la langue des aedes forme un systeme coherent, une analyse synchronique tenant compte de son dynamisme interne le prouve. Elle temoigne des representations collectives de la societe grecque archaique : a travers les emplois idiomatiques des verbes de mouvement, l’auteur etudie les representations du temps, de l’espace du texte, de la mort etc., et, a propos de plusieurs de ces emplois, met en question la notion de metaphore.
