English summary: The medieval philosopher Duns Scotus grappled with the question of the unicity and distinctness of individuals. To solve this, Scotus developed the principle by which substances become individual, asking if it is enough to exist as an individual, leading to his concept of haecceity. French description: Pourquoi chaque etre est-il un etre, distinct de tout autre, et indivisible sans destruction? En quoi le singulier est-il ultime, irreductible? Est-ce un fait brut, sans raison? Et pouvons-nous depasser laproclamation que l’individu est ineffable et indefinissable? Pour resoudre ce probleme, Scot recherche un principe metaphysique par lequel les substances deviennent individuelles. La matiere est-elle ce principe? Suffit-il d’exister pour etre individuel? Peut-on concevoir, par-dela l’essence indifferente, une nouvelle difference, qu’il appellera bientot haecceite? – Telles sont les questions difficiles qu’il affronte dans son Principe d’individuation (Ordinatio II, d.3). Dans ce traite, Duns Scot elabore une nouvelle metaphysique du singulier. Celle-ci va de pair avec sa reevaluation de la contingence, son invention de la connaissance intuitive, et sa prise en compte de la finitude. Elle exercera son influence jusqu’a Leibniz.
