Die Variation der Tradition
Modalitäten der Ritualadaption im Alten Ägypten. Akten des Internationalen Symposions vom 25.-28. November 2012 in Heidelberg

German text.
English summary: Rituals are regarded as deeply traditional. They enshrine social structures, myths, and traditional patterns of behavior, and this is true even in those cases where a rituals original meaning has been long forgotten. Even in Egypt, where myth-bound ritual languages had been handed down for millennia, this inherited nature of rituals is all too tangible. At the same time, it is also well known, that long-standing rituals, representing performative and communicative events, were changed incrementally and reoriented according to shifting contextual factors. These changes are reflected not only in the space of the editorial redactions of ritual texts and prologues but are indicated by the archaeological record as well. Especially in the necropolises, the funerary equipment of the graves provide evidence, through their decoration programs as well as in the variety of material remains, of the immediate context of cult practices, of the adaptation and modification of traditional rituals. The proceedings of the Heidelberg conference seek to take into account these special circumstances and investigate the relationship between the ancient Egyptians and their ritual firmly within the point of view of change. In these essays, expertise from the fields philology and archaeology are intertwined.
