By (author) M.-J. Roche
The book explores Nabataean history and society in its evolution through almost one hundred and fifty inscriptions and dated papyri. The five-part layout presents documents from the Nabataean kingdom, then the large funeral inscriptions of Hegra (Mada’in Saleh), then those found outside the boundaries of the kingdom, and finally those dating from Roman times; a final chapter reviews the palaeographical aspects. Important appendices present the lists in order of catalogue and according to their dating, regional distribution, typology, dating elements used, numbers and figures, epigraphic concordances, places of preservation, chronology, indexes, and bibliography. Through redundant legal formulas and highly developed royal epithets, often neglected by research, the role of the archives of the Royal Palace of Petra or temples such as that of Hegra in the 1st century AD can be discerned.
