The Herder Yearbook offers – now for the eighteenth time – a selection of current research on Johann Gottfried Herder (1744-1803). Authors examine Herder’s critique of Kant, Thomas Mann’s interest in Herder, and Michael Landmann’s Herder reception among other topics.

The Herder Yearbook presents – in its eighteenth iteration – a diverse selection of current research on Johann Gottfried Herder, including articles inquiring into questions such as: how can current criticism of the philosophical canon as too Eurocentric profit from Herder’s insights? How does Herder’s notion of “Wohlsein” figure in his critique of Kant? Did Herder’s anthropological thinking, between the Strassburg and Weimar periods of his work, influence Goethe’s Faust? Was Thomas Mann truly uninfluenced by Herder? What are the surprising parallels between Herder’s culture criticism and 20th century Swiss philosopher and anthropologist Michael Landmann? The volume concludes with reviews of selected literature on Herder and the fifteenth edition of the extensive Herder bibliography of primary and secondary literature concludes this volume. The Herder Yearbook is published, every other year, on behalf of the International Herder Society and presents interdisciplinary scholarship on all aspects of Herder’s works as well as their publication history and reception.
