English summary: Volume 33 of the “Madrid Studies Series” (Madrider Beitrage), titled “Morro de Mezquitilla: the Phoenician-Punic settlement on the Algarrobo Estuary,” presents the archaeological discoveries from the excavation of the site, which took place under H. Schubart chiefly between 1981 and 1982. The archaeological site, a hill located on the southern coast of Spain at a location about 30 km from Malaga at the mouth of the Rio Algarrobo, contains the earliest evidence of the Phoenician presence on the Iberian Peninsula. Because of the richness of the archaeological find on the one hand, and the growth of the settlement up to the period of the Roman Republic on the other, Morro de Mezquitilla is in an important site for understanding Phoenician westward expansion and the development of the western Phoenician world in the period from the 9th century BCE onward. This volume contains a dozen studies by different authors on stratigraphy, architecture, ceramic finds, the occasional inscription found there, metallic and animal finds as well as the results from radio-carbon dating analysis. This work also contains over a hundred panel-pictures of the site and the artefacts in brilliant detail and quality. German description: Im Band 33 der Reihe Madrider Beitrage, “Morro de Mezquitilla. Die phonizisch-punische Niederlassung an der Algarrobo-Mundung”, werden die Ergebnisse der Ausgrabungen vorgelegt, die hauptsachlich in den Jahren 1981/82 unter der Leitung von H. Schubart durchgefuhrt wurden. Der Fundplatz an der spanischen Sudkuste – auf einem Hugel 30 km ostlich von Malaga an der Mundung des Rio Algarrobo gelegen – hat die fruhesten Zeugnisse phonizischer Prasenz auf der Iberischen Halbinsel erbracht. Angesichts der Vielfalt des Fundstoffes einerseits und dessen zeitlicher Erstreckung bis in die romisch-republikanische Zeit andererseits kommt dem Morro de Mezquitilla eine hervorragende Bedeutung in der Bewertung der phonizischen Expansion nach Westen und der Entwicklung der westphonizischen Oikumene in der Zeit ab dem spaten 9. Jh. v. Chr. zu. Der Band enthalt ein Dutzend Beitrage verschiedener Autoren zur Stratigraphie, zur Architektur, zur Fundkeramik und den dort gelegentlich zu findenden Aufschriften, zu den Metall- und Tierknochenfunden sowie auch zu den Ergebnissen der absoluten Datierung (Radiokarbondaten). Auf weit uber hundert Tafelseiten werden die Befunde und das Fundmaterial in hervorragender Qualitat abgebildet und zuganglich gemacht.
