Asyut in Middle Egypt was one of the most important cities in Pharaonic times. As a political and cultural center, it gave rise to many historic and artistic monuments through the millennia, monuments that illuminate the regional peculiarities of the wider area. Even before the first major archaeological excavations, European and American travelers visited the site during the 17th to 19th centuries and recorded their impressions in travelogues. This volume analyzes around 100 of those accounts, among them previously unpublished texts, and reconstructs on the basis of the sources the state and destruction of Asyuts archaeological monuments from the 17th to 19th centuries. German text.
English summary: Asyut in Middle Egypt was one of the most important cities in Pharaonic times. This volume analyzes around 100 of those accounts, among them previously unpublished texts.
