Les émotions dans l’Égypte Ancienne
Culture, images, textes
Edited by Marie-Lys Arnette Edited by Rania Y. Merzeban
Emotion, a term understood as synonymous with affect, sensitivity, feeling and sentiment, covers an extremely vast and complex field of reactions. Research in the human and social sciences has demonstrated its cultural contingency: every human emotion is not only unique to an individual, but is also profoundly conditioned by the culture and community to which he or she belongs. The expression of emotions is therefore highly cultural.
This collective work explores emotions in ancient Egypt, as communicated through images and texts. This comparison reveals significant differences: in terms of intensity, images are generally more restrained, while texts readily evoke emotional outbursts, a dissimilarity that no doubt stems from the way in which the visual arts and literature are standardized.
Much more than a simple overview, the twelve chapters that make up the book set out to define the very notion of Egyptian emotion, which belongs to the wider field of sensory experience (what one “tastes,” in Egyptian vocabulary), as well as to show its very particular cultural expressions, which always serve a precise purpose.
