Im Gesamtbestand des Museo Gregoriano Profano sind die Historischen Reliefs mit 20 Denkmalern eine zahlenmassig wenig umfangreiche aber uberaus wichtige Gruppe. Sie umfasst neben kaum bekannten Stucken auch zentrale Werke der romischen Kunst wie die Reliefs von der “Ara der Vicomagistri”, die “Grossen Cancelleria-Reliefs” und den “Larenaltar vom Belvedere”, die in den letzten Jahrzehnten intensiv und oft kontrovers diskutiert worden sind. Auch weniger prominente Reliefs, die zum Teil wegen ihres Erhaltungszustandes schwierig zu deuten sind, erweisen sich durch die eingehenden Untersuchungen als aufschlussreiche Zeugnisse offentlicher Monumente.
