Johannes Lydos’ Werk De magistratibus ist eine der zentralen Quellen zur Organisation des Romischen Reiches in der Spatantike. Durch die zahlreichen historischen Exkurse bietet es zudem eine Fulle an Informationen zur Geschichte vieler ziviler und militarischer Amter. Die Beitrage dieses Bandes widmen sich umfassend De magistratibus, untersuchen aber auch die Zusammenhange mit Lydos’ weiteren uberlieferten Schriften De mensibus und De ostentis. Nach einer Einfuhrung, die De magistratibus forschungs- und wissenschaftsgeschichtlich einordnet, beschaftigen sich die Autoren mit Lydos’ Bild von Konstantinopel und seinem Konzept des spatantiken Kaisertums. Anschlieaend setzen sie den oft nur als Kompilator verstandenen Lydos als Historiograph ins Bild. Weitere Beitrage behandeln Lydos’ Darstellung der (christlichen) Religion in De magistratibus, De mensibus und De ostentis. Den Abschluss bilden Studien zu Verwaltung und Recht des Ostromischen Reiches im 6. Jahrhundert n. Chr. und zur Kirchengeschichtsschreibung.
