Zur bildlichen Rezeption griechischer Dichter und Denker in der römischen Lebenswelt

The relations between Greek and Roman culture constituted a continuous exchange since the Roman expansion into the Eastern Mediterranean area in the second century BC. One aspect of this phenomenon is the reception of Greek education and its visual presence in the Roman world, which moved between contentual integration and amateurish dabbling. The main focus of this study is on depictions en miniature, among which carved stones play a preeminent role. They are analyzed under iconographic and typological as well as historico-cultural aspects. In this context, the question of their qualities as a cultural expression of certain notions of Greek education in a graphic transformation of the discourse around paideia is of central importance. German Description: Der Kontakt zwischen griechischer und romischer Kultur bildete seit dem Ausgreifen Roms in den ostlichen Mittelmeerraum im 2. Jahrhundert v. Chr. ein kontinuierliches Austauschverhaltnis. Ein Aspekt dieses Gesamtphanomens ist die Rezeption griechischer Bildung und ihre visuelle Prasenz in der romischen Lebenswelt, die sich im Spannungsfeld zwischen inhaltlicher Erfassung und laienhaften Dilettierens bewegte. Der Fokus der Untersuchung liegt auf Darstellungen en miniature, unter denen v.a. die geschnittene Steine eine herausragende Rolle spielen. Sie werden sowohl unter ikonographischen und typologischen als auch kulturgeschichtlichen Aspekten untersucht. Von zentraler Bedeutung sind dabei Fragen nach ihren Qualitaten als kulturelle Ausdrucksform von Vorstellungen griechischer Bildung in einer bildlichen Transformation des Diskurses um paideia.
