Ce livre montre comment Paul utilise au mieux les ressources de sa double culture juive (biblique comme hellenistique) et grecque pour convaincre les Galates. L’analyse est centre sur la demonstration au coeur de la lettre aux Galates, en particulier sur Ga 3,6-4,7. Le premier chapitre met en lumiere comment les differentes sections de la composition de Galates temoignent deja de cette biculturalite paulinienne, puisqu’elles empruntent autant a la diatribe hellenistique qu’au sermon synagogal. La second chapitre montre que, dans la section 3,6-22, Paul imploie une regle hermeneutique analogue a ce que la tradition rabbinique appellera plus tard gezerah shawah tout en se situant dans un cadre juridique proche de ce que les legistes romains appellant le status scripti et voluntatis. Le troisieme chapitre etudie les details de l’argumentation ainsi que les metaphors utilisees par Paul. Dans la section 3,15 – 4,7 de sa lettre, Paul imploie en effet des analogies qui renvoient aux deux cultures qu’il maitrise. Une attention particuliere est accordee a Ga 3,28, qui fait echo a un lieu commun de la culture grecque tout en renvoyant a un element central de la conscience que le judaisme a de lui-meme. En liant la thematique grecque de la recherche de l’unite et celle, plus biblique, de la filiation, Paul nous dit quelque chose d’essentiel sur la nature de la communaute ecclesiale qui porte la memoire du Ressuscite, la famille eschatologique des enfants de Dieu
