English summary: What is Israel? There is hardly a more matter-of-fact term in the Old Testament, yet academic debate provides many different answers to this question. Kristin Weingart analyzes the use of the name ‘Israel’ in the Old Testament as well as its underlying conceptions of Israel. She shows that it was the social construction of an ancestral based community which formed the foundation for a common Israelite identity during both the pre- and post-exilic period, and which also forms the basis for the various uses of the term ‘Israel’. German description: Was ist Israel?
