Richard of Saint-Victor’s treatise <i>On the Extermination of Evil and Promotion of Good</i> is a spiritual interpretation of the verse of Psalm 113 that celebrates the Israelites’ crossing with the Ark of the Covenant into the Promised Land as that event is described in Joshua 3–4. The treatise is presented here in an improved Latin text and the first translation into English.<br>
This work elaborates Richard’s understanding of the Christian life, which begins with an exodus from the region of unlikeness and return to oneself. There follows a long journey of inner purification of desires and feelings that leads to the Promised Land, which is contemplation of and ultimately union with God. In this process, self-love decreases and the soul dilates in love of God.<br>
The text is an excellent introduction to Victorine spirituality, exegesis, and rhetoric, particularly as these are developed in Richard’s <i>On the Twelve Patriarchs</i> (<i>Benjamin minor</i>) and <i>On Contemplation</i> (<i>Benjamin major</i>).
