Gerd Theiaen offers an interim assessment of the psychological exegesis of religion, wants to overcome anti-psychologism in Protestant exegesis, recognizes the openness of Catholic theology to it, and wants to show ways in which decidedly psychological criticism of religion can be taken up positively. Early Christian religion had therapeutic potential, insofar as it ended compulsive repetition of ablutions and sacrifices through baptism and the Eucharist and made new forms of emotional, cognitive, and motivational coping with life possible.
