Nicht nur durch Geburt und Tod Martin Luthers verdient das Mansfelder Land in der Reformationszeit besondere Beachtung. Es war zugleich die Wirkungsstatte bedeutender Theologen. Zu ihnen gehorten Erasmus Sarcerius (1501-1559) und Cyriakus Spangenberg (1528-1604).Ihrem Wirken haben sich Tagungen gewidmet, deren Beitrage in diesem Band vorgelegt werden. Nach der Tatigkeit als Rektor und Reformator in Siegen und Pfarrer an der Leipziger Thomaskirche wirkte Sarcerius 1553-1959 als Superintendent in Eisleben. Als Stadt- und Schlossprediger in Mansfeld bestimmte Spangenberg das theologische Profil der Grafschaft bis er 1575 im Streit um die Erbsundenlehre weichen musste. Seine Mansfelder Chronica ist die wichtigste Geschichtsquelle fur das Mansfelder Land. Als Prediger, Seelsorger und Streittheologe fuhlte er sich als aktiver Verteidiger von Luthers Erbe.
