The one thing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people note is the lack of knowledge and understanding that exists within non-Indigenous Australia about its First Nations people. We have made numerous attempts to remedy this situation through hosting events, conferences and through our extensive research documenting our epistemology, ontological perspectives for all to access and learn. This means teaching them about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ deep sense of the sacred and a Spirituality that has been nurtured over several millennia. This rich ancient knowledge has mostly been ignored by the West or demonised by the church, and it is critical that non-Indigenous people have an opportunity to gain insights and a greater understanding of our Spiritual beliefs and the significance of our spiritual connection to Country.
We recognise the Creator Spirit as our creator and affirm that we are created in the image of God. We are who we are in our fullness as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people because this is who God made us to be. We make affirmation of the Creator Spirit’s endowment of our identity, rich in culture, language, and bestowal of Country. Our law and teachings are enshrined in the philosophy and ancient wisdom of our Spirit Ancestors. This is who we are and how we live our life – the essence of knowing, being and doing.
The question confronting us is how we could teach non-Indigenous people about our identity and how we could help them see the value of our ancient, transformative wisdom. Over the centuries there has been so many negative narratives written about us that were based on misinformation, lies and total deception. We need to correct this information and to provide truth and insights that come from our perspectives.
In early 2023 it became clear to us that we Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of faith needed to gather and to be heard and to be made visible. Over the decades Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander church leaders, theologians and Christian community have been pushed to the margins of society and in many cases ignored by the Australian Christian community. It had been a long time since we had an Indigenous ecumenical event that showcased our theologians both current and emerging and which provided a national platform from which we could be seen and heard.
This is why the Raising Our Tribal Voice for Justice conference was organised for February 2024. It would become a national focus for Indigenous theology and provide a clear statement of self-determination. The participants heard from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander scholars, theologians and community church leaders. This book is a compilation of some of these Indigenous voices providing a powerful testimony for present and future generations, both First Nations and non-Indigenous.
