This publication with archival sources on the life and work of Lucas Cranach the Younger is long overdue. The exhibitions of the Cranach year 2015 showed that, while art historical research on the Younger Cranach has made significant progress, the lives of the Wittenberg painter and his family and his correspondence have been sparsely documented by archival sources. For the first time, 22 manuscripts or dictated letters are published here in full text and in copies. A total of 220 texts resulting from research in German archives, each with an introduction and classified in terms of subject and chronology, give documentation on the family and biographical matters, the workshop, the local politician, and the economical enterprises beyond the workshop.
