For Ptolemaic Egypt, the period from 180-116 BC, which opens with a succession crisis, followed by a Seleucid invasion of the country, and fratricidal dynastic struggles, is traditionally viewed in a negative way, not only by ancient historians but also by modern historiography. Following Polybius, the increasing intervention of Rome in the affairs of the kingdom is regarded as a mark of weakness. Though the dynasty’s difficulties are undeniable, this period is also one of recomposition, which sees the installation of a new mode of government and a deepening of the administrative practices. The dynastic issues that really weaken the country testify, paradoxically, to an increased popular attachment to the monarchy, with the population supporting one or the other Ptolemaic camp. It is these different aspects that this volume explores through different case studies.
