By (author) M.-P. Chaufray
In the Egyptian priestly hierarchy, lesonis refers to the priest chosen by his peers to administer the property and staff of a temple for at least one year. The Greek term ??????? transcribes the Egyptian mr-n. In a country where temples played an important economic and social role, this function gave its bearer a prominent place. After a paleographic and lexical study of the title, presenting its different spellings, the difficulties of its etymology, the conditions of its use in Egyptian and the methods of its transcription or translation into Greek, a socio-historical synthesis presents data on access to the office, its exercise, and the position of its holder in the temple. A catalog of all the lesonis-priests attested from the first mentions of the title to the end of the Ptolemaic period completes the work, as does a selection of 25 emblematic texts, in Demotic and Greek, with translations.
