Chronologiquement et biographiquement l’evenement le plus caracteristique de ce livre, qui se deploie tout entier dans le cadre de l’annee 1353, du 5 janvier (premiere lettre) au 16 septembre (quatorzieme et derniere lettre), est sans aucun doute l’abandon d’Avignon, tant desire par le poete, et son tout aussi desire et definitif retour en Italie. Ce retour eut lieu a un moment non precise de l’ete, entre la fin mai et le mois de juin.
