Passivity (Greek: pathos), a category which is fundamental not only to theology, can be seen as a third element in the relationship between ethos and logos. In a turnabout from the history of the disappearance of this unloved category, the concept of pathos is drawn into the engrossing relationship between ethos and pathos, based on Aristotle, in a study of Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, German mysticism and the Lutheran theology of the Reformation as well as in a dialogue with the phenomenology of Husserl and Waldenfels, among others. In a passive reduction, Philipp Stoellger traces ethos and logos hermeneutically back to the pathos which preceded them. The vita passiva is shown to be a life of creative passivity, a passivity by passion. German description: Passivitat aus Passion fragt nach der Herkunft der Theologie aus Passion. Welchen Sinn hat es, von Passivitat zu sprechen, wenn Theologie als Interpretation der Passion entsteht? Passivitat (gr. Pathos) ist eine nicht nur theologisch fundamentale Kategorie, die als Figur des Dritten im Verhaltnis von Ethos und Logos zu verstehen ist. Gegen die Geschichte des Verschwindens dieser ungeliebten Kategorie wird der Pathosbegriff in das spannungsvolle Verhaltnis von Ethos und Logos eingezeichnet, ausgehend von Aristoteles, in Auseinandersetzung mit Augustin, Thomas von Aquin, der deutschen Mystik und der lutherischen Theologie der Reformation sowie im Dialog mit der Phanomenologie unter anderem von Husserl und Waldenfels. In ‘passiver Reduktion’ fuhrt Philipp Stoellger Ethos und Logos hermeneutisch auf das ihnen vorausgehende Pathos zuruck. Die ‘vita passiva’ erscheint dann als Leben aus ‘kreativer Passivitat’: als Passivitat aus Passion.
