Die Frauenrechtlerin und Sozialreformerin Pandita Ramabai Sarasvati (1858-1922) gilt als eine der bedeutendsten Frauen der jungeren indischen Geschichte. Von ihren Zeitgenossen als “Gottin der Weisheit” verehrt, fand ihre Popularitat mit ihrer Hinwendung zur evangelikalen Erweckungsbewegung ein jahes Ende, weshalb sie die letzten zwei Jahrzehnte ihres Lebens in relativer Isolation auf der von ihr gegrundeten Witwen- und Waisenstation bei Pune verbringen musste. Die vorliegende Arbeit thematisiert ein Ereignis in dieser letzten Lebensphase, das zu einem zentralen Kulminationspunkt zahlreicher Diskurse werden konnte: das sogenannte “Mukti Revival” im Jahre 1905. Aufgrund dieser spirituellen Erweckung unter den subalternen Bewohnerinnen der Station wurde der Ort ausser von britischen und US-amerikanischen Missionaren vor allem von westlichen Historikern der Pfingstbewegung zu einem Ort heilsgeschichtlicher Bedeutung stilisiert, wahrend alternative, den kolonialen Konzeptionen entgegenstehende Interpretationen verdrangt wurden. Auf der Basis poststrukturalistischer und postkolonialer Theorie und anhand einer detaillierten Quellenanalyse zeichnet das Buch die Karriere der konkurrierenden Narrative und die Genese des Wissens uber das “Mukti Revival” nach, um die “Erfindung” religioser und historischer Wirklichkeit im kolonialen Kontext transparent zu machen.
