English summary: The charity of the Christian god is directed towards the salvation of individuals, and therefore, western thinkers have deduced from this that individualism arrived in the world along with Christianity. The secular individual of the modern west, therefore, developed from this Christian basis. This work deals with the assumption of the power of Christianity to advance individuality, which Christian missions have also had an individualizing effect through their message in other cultural contexts and therefore have also brought with it an improvement in the roles of women. The collegial research group Religious Individualization in Historical Perspectives of the Max Weber College of Erfurt has brought this all-too-evident commitment to individuality within Christianity and the modern West into question and have submitted the role of mission for empirical examination. This occurred in April 2012 in the context of an international and interdisciplinary congress, whose results are published in this volume. Four sections deal with the fundamental questions of the issue, among which are comparatively “Women in the Mission.” Five sections consider case studies from America, East and South Asia, Africa and the South Pacific. The starting hypothesis only survives the empirical examination roughly and with strongly differentiated results. German description: Die Menschenliebe des christlichen Gottes richtet sich auf das Heil des Einzelnen. Daraus haben abendlandische Denker gefolgert, erst mit dem Christentum sei Individualitat in die Welt gekommen. Auf diesem christlichen Fundament habe sich dann der sakulare Individualismus der westlichen Moderne entwickelt. Die Annahme der individualitatsbefordernden Kraft des Christentums hat die These befordert, die christliche Mission habe durch ihre Botschaft auch in anderen kulturellen Kontexten individualisierend gewirkt und dadurch auch eine Verbesserung der Rolle der Frauen mit sich gebracht. Die Kollegforschergruppe Religiose Individualisierung in historischer Perspektive des Max-Weber-Kollegs Erfurt hat diese allzu selbstverstandliche Bindung von Individualitat an das Christentum und die abendlandische Moderne infrage gestellt und die Rolle der Mission der empirischen Uberprufung unterzogen. Dies geschah im April 2012 im Rahmen eines internationalen und interdisziplinaren Kongresses, dessen Ergebnisse hier vorliegen. Vier Sektionen behandeln Grundsatzfragen, darunter vergleichend “Frauen in der Mission”. Funf Sektionen befassen sich mit Fallstudien aus Amerika, Ost- und Sudasien, Afrika und dem Sudpazifik. Im Ergebnis uberlebt die Ausgangshypothese den empirischen Hartetest nur angeschlagen und stark differenziert.
