For a long time, monotheistic concepts of God have dominated the understanding of religion in a Europe shaped by Christianity. For the early Christians, the monotheistic concept of God, which was adopted from Judaism, was an elementary part of their self-image. Not always taken into account was the fact that monotheistic trends were also noticed in ancient polytheistic culture, trends that are discussed as “pagan monotheism”. The articles in this volume analyze monotheistic concepts, arguments and models using authors from late antiquity as examples. The authors deal with significant aspects of monotheistic thinking in which the development of complex ancient monotheism is expressed in Christian and in “pagan” texts as well. German text.
Monotheistische Gottesvorstellungen haben uber einen langen Zeitraum hinweg das Religionsverstandnis des christlich gepragten Europa beherrscht. Fur die fruhen Christen gehorte das vom Judentum ubernommene monotheistische Gottesbild elementar zu ihrem Selbstverstandnis. Aus dem Blick gerat dabei, dass auch in der polytheistischen antiken Kultur monotheistische Tendenzen zu beobachten sind, die in der Forschung unter dem Phanomen `paganer Monotheismus` diskutiert werden. Die Beitrage des vorliegenden Bandes analysieren monotheistische Konzepte, Argumentationen und Modelle anhand ausgewahlter Werke spatantiker Autoren. Dabei werden wichtige Aspekte monotheistischer Denkfiguren erortert, in denen die Entwicklung des komplexen antiken Monotheismus sowohl in christlichen als auch in `paganen` Texten Ausdruck gefunden hat.
