Mit der Interpretation des Traktats “De bono mortis”, der hier erstmals ausfuhrlich besprochen wird, zeigt der Autor, wie Ambrosius den Tod entgegen neuplatonistischer Vereinnahmung in die christliche Existenz integriert. Durch die umfassende Darstellung der Gestalt und Funktion einer “Theologie des Trostes” tragt die Studie zu einem Verstandnis der Verschmelzung von paganer Philosophie, Rhetorik und christlicher Theologie in der Spatantike bei.
