Medien im antiken Palastina
Materielle Kommunikation und Medialitat als Thema der Palastinaarchaologie

English summary: Does it make any sense to talk about ‘the media of antiquity’ or ‘the media in antiquity’, or is this an inappropriate modernism? Which term pertaining to the media is suitable for archaeology? Using the southern Levant, especially ancient Israel and Palestine as examples, the authors of the articles in this volume examine ‘mediality’, above all the ‘mediality’ of everyday material culture, and analyze the term ‘media’ to ascertain whether it can be applied to ancient communication structures. In addition to standard essays reflecting different concepts and terms of media, the work contains reflections on the ‘media transfer’ between Egypt and Palestine, and the authors use selected examples to study the mediality of burials, pictures on coins, seals, inscriptions and ornaments on buildings. German description: In der Rede von Mediengesellschaften, Medienhaushalt oder Medialitat spiegelt sich die Reflexion uber veranderte Kommunikationsstrukturen. Die kulturhistorisch pragenden Paradigmata der Antike spielen in diesem Diskurs bisher eine eher marginale Rolle. Ist es aber uberhaupt sinnvoll von Medien der Antike oder Medien in der Antike zu sprechen oder handelt es sich dabei um einen unangemessenen Modernismus? Welcher Medienbegriff eignet sich fur die Altertumswissenschaften und Archaologien? Am Beispiel der sudlichen Levante, dem antiken Israel und Palastina, untersuchen die Autoren der hier gesammelten Beitrage die Medialitat vor allem der materiellen Kultur des Alltags und uberprufen damit den Medienbegriff auf seine Ubertragbarkeit auf antike Kommunikationstrukturen. Neben grundlegenden Beitragen, in denen unterschiedliche Medienbegriffe und die medientheoretische Debatte im Hintergrund stehen, wird der Medientransfer zwischen Agypten und Palastina reflektiert und es wird an ausgewahlten Beispielen die Medialitat von Bestattungen, Munzbildern, Siegeln, Inschriften und Bauornamentik exemplarisch untersucht. Die Beitrage des vorliegenden Bandes gehen auf ein internationales Forschungskolloqium zuruck, das im Juli 2004 unter dem Titel Medien der Alltagskultur. Realien und kulturelle Kommunikation als Thema der Palastinaarchaologie an der Universitat zu Koln abgehalten wurde.
