Following a brief overview of the role of marble in the Roman world, the author proceeds to specific studies on the provenance and use of marble in Leptis Magna. Alla trattazione generale inerente la storia delle pietre bianche e policrome nel mondo romano e in ambiente leptitano. segue il repertorio dei marmi presenti a Leptis Magna e in contesti posti nelle sue immediate vicinanze. A ciascun litotipo bianco e colorato, distinto in base alle aree geografiche di provenienza, e dedicata una scheda tesa a illustrare le diverse problematiche relative alla sua origine, provenienza e diffusione nel mondo romano e a Lepits Magna, delineando pertanto un quadro diacronico delle diverse qualita dei marmi impiegati per tutti i tipi di decorazione.
