Traditional pottery of all sizes and shapes, made over the past 150 years from local clays and for local use, include handmade, wheel-thrown, and mold-made wares with plain, incised, or glazed surfaces. The author’s ethnoarchaeological background sheds light on the over 200 pieces displayed at CAARI.

An unparalleled collection of over 200 local pots, curated in thirteen private or public collections, filled the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute and surrounding garden to celebrate Nicosia, Cultural Capital of Europe in 1995. Coil-built, wheel-thrown, and mold-made pots, plain, incised, or glazed, provided educational displays and serene exhibits. Explanations of how, where, and who made or used the pottery derive from long-term ethnoarchaeological research. Men and women, sedentary or itinerant rural craftspeople produced cookware, jugs, jars, beehives, basins, pithoi, censers, ovens, decorative pieces, tiles, and bricks for use by the local population and not foreign visitors.
