L’influence que le Japon – sa culture aussi bien que son architecture – a exercee sur le celebre architecte americain Frank Lloyd Wright, est avant tout visible dans ses propres creations. Contrairement a ses contemporains aux Etats-Unis qui consideraient l’architecture europeenne comme faisant partie de leur heritage, Wright a pris le Japon et la culture japonaise comme modele pour son esthetique. Et cette influence se manifeste egalement dans la constitution de collections d’objets d’arts, de sculptures et surtout d’estampes. En 1906, il expose a l’Art Institut of Chicago la collection d’ukiyo-e (des oeuvres de Hiroshige) qu’il a commencee un an auparavant, a l’occasion de son premier voyage au Japon. Collectionneur (il fut l’un des premiers en Occident) et marchand incontournable, il developpe immediatement une theorie interpretative (qu’il publie il y a tout juste 100 ans), The Japanese Print : an Interpretation, devenue a la fois une lecture essentielle pour les experts et les amateurs de l’art japonais et pour tous ceux qui veulent comprendre l’architecture de Wright. Inedite en francais, indisponible en anglais, nous proposons de ce livre deux versions : un tirage de la traduction en langue francaise realisee par Laurent Bury et un tirage en langue anglaise, respectant le choix des textes et la presentation de la reedition de 1967.
